How to Make Your Own Wedding Invitations

Spending thousands of dollars on paper can sometimes sound like the most unreasonable cost of getting married. Unfortunately, making your own wedding invitations can be one of the most time-consuming do-it-yourself tasks of planning a wedding. Still, you can save a lot of money and come out with invitations as good or better than you could have purchased from a professional.

First, the process of making your wedding invitations is likely to extend further than the invitations themselves. For instance, consider whether you will also need announcements, save the date cards, response cards, reception or rehearsal invitations, place cards, programs, and thank you notes. It’s unlikely that your wedding will require all of these, but you’ll probably want some of them. It’s easiest to take care of them all at one time.

Next, decide whether you want to make it a pure do-it-yourself project or a more modified do-it-yourself project. If you decide to do it entirely by yourself, get a friend, block out an entire weekend, and head to the nearest arts and crafts store. If you will be printing the invitations, make sure that your printer will work with any type of paper you plan to print on. If you’ll need to attach paper to paper, make sure you know your best options. Elmer’s glue is unlikely to look very professional. If you don’t already have an idea, look at samples on the Internet to get ideas for the wording.

If you decide to go with a more modified approach, there are a number of companies that make it easier to make your own invitations by offering templates and making beautiful stationary available. Many of these services are offered over the Internet and the invitations can still be printed off your own printer. Most modern laser and inkjet printers are capable of producing professional-quality invitations. If you’re just looking to save some money but still want the best-looking invitations possible, this may be the choice for you.

Remember, the invitations and other printed materials shouldn’t stress you out. They’re a fun formality that will be a good keepsake for you and your guests, but nothing more. If you’re making them yourself, focus on being proud to send them to your friends and family but don’t focus on making them “perfect.” Anything that gets all your loved ones in one place for the biggest day of your life will be perfect enough.
