We are so excited to share a story from one of our clients - Miss America 2009!

I was floored when J Scot Reid of Crowning Wedding and Events contacted us regarding Katie Stam, (Miss America 2009) and Brian Irk's chic Indiana wedding. The couple had their own custom designed logo and wanted us to make an aisle runner and unity candle set incorporating the logo. The results were amazing.

We're super excited about the opportunity to share an interview with one of our Twitter pals. Victoria Joanne is the owner of Hand Crafted Creations. She was kind enough to take time from her schedule share some insight of her specialty.

1. How did you start such a unique business?
Created the handcrafted Wedding accessories (Pillow, basket and Card mailbox) for my nieces wedding in 2000. Everyone LOVE them so much that they encouraged me to go into business. So I created my first website www.hand-craftedcreations.com Garters became such a populare item that in 2008 I launched my www.Customweddinggarters.com site.

2. How long have you been in business and what direction do you plan to move on with your hand made creations?
I’ve been in business since 2001. So it’s coming up on 10 years!! It’s amazing to me because when I first started It was for fun. But over the years it’s grown into a serious and successful business. I plan to keep creating unique, custom made, and high quality creations. Custom embroidery, Painting and sewing all are included in the plan.

3. How do you feel your garters have been received within the wedding community? Well in 2001 there was barely any choice - sites offered pre-made garters and there were only about 3 themed garters sites including HCC. Because of the uniqueness and fun that my colorful and themed garters offer – they have attracted the attention of many brides and thus many other crafters who in turn started making colorful garters. So 3 main themed garter websites in 2001 has morphed into 100’s upon 100’s of sites that offer colorful themed garters. Brides obviously like the unique and custom designs. J Over 10,000 HCC garters created definitely speaks volumes.

4. What are some of your favorite social networking sites?
Twitter and Facebook

5. How long does it take you to complete one custom garter?
It totally depends on the design of the garter… how difficult it is to create and if there are handsewn crystals etc… could be an hour to All day… My clients book early so that they will know they have a place in my creation schedule. If it is needed I am more than happy to put priority timing on the orders of clients who need rush service. Express rush orders can ship out within 24 hours of payment. This is an important aspect of my service. Being able to give my clients not only the quality creation they desire, but making sure it arrives to them in time for their big day.

6. What are some of the unique ways your garters can be customized?
I offer many different upgrades to transform a fun custom garter into something that totally incorporates the personality and interests of my clients. A few unique ways include the following:

Fun prints and fabrics in many colors and themes: Fireman garters can be in satin or they can incorporate Flame bands for a fun touch, other prints available include Camo for the military bride, Hello Kitty, John Deere, Spring time daisies, Rainbows, Polkadots, Skulls for the punk rock bride or Pirate themed wedding and so many more prints.

Custom Embroidery. This is where my client can personalize their garter with their monogram, Names, and or Date or any meaningful saying they want. It will be professionally designed and sewn onto their garter. ALONG with these Personalized lettering The embroidery service also incorporates Custom Design elements such as fleur de lis, hearts, or even custom designed Sorority Greek letters or themed designs like 007’s Gun.

Hand Sewn Swarovski Crystals: This is one of the popular upgrades for the more fancy lacey garters. But They also are beautiful when added to satin bands as well. The Swarovski crystals add beautiful sparkle, glitter and elegance. It’s an investment for many brides who are looking for a keepsake that they will save as memory and or pass down as a special family heirloom. Each Crystal is hand sew onto the fabric one at a time individually. This quality handcrafting means, if one crystal comes off, the others will NOT follow in a string.

7. What is one of the most over the top request you’ve ever received from a client?
This is such a hard one to answer. I’ve done so many unique creations. I think If I had to narrow it down – it would be for a Care Bear Ruffle garter with Orange satin and ruffle. It was quite bright and very over the top – but the client LOVED It so “My job was done” that’ what it’s all about for me. What do my clients want? What makes them happy? I find that out and create something that completely meets their desires.

8. When you find some down time, what do you LOVE to do?
I really love to be able to spend time with my family, and friends. Going out to lunch is always a treasured down time. I also would love to have more time to ride my bike out in nature… Nature is my most favorite place to spend time.

9. How do you find the time to get all the “important” stuff done?
Well there are two catagories of “important“ stuff. For family things - I always make sure to work my finger to the bone if I know something important is coming up. I will stay up all hours of the night to get work done in order to have the time to do my personal “important” stuff. When the “important “ stuff is business related - it all boils down to my creation schedule. Everything is scheduled in my book. My clients understand that I have a lot to work on. The book early to be added to my schedule and if they need their custom creation right away, they are always welcome to add rush service to their order. Have always offered the highest quality rush service… Orders can ship out with in one week or even within 24 HOURS if needed that soon. All this is possible because of my organized creation schedule book.

10. Which show would best describe you?...and why? Platinum Weddings, Whose Wedding Is It Anyway or Bridezilla’s.
Definitely “Platinum Weddings” Well first, I can totally leave out “bridzillas” because just about every client I have is a total and utter pleasure to work with. I love them all and am so grateful to be able to serve them in the way I do. So it leaves the two choice and Platinum Weddings Is it! My brides are looking for something Unique, custom made, high quality heirlooms, designed by a professional who has been in the industry for many many years. They are confident they will get that when they place a custom order with me.

Vendor Luv:The Paper Couturiere

I'm super excited about the opportunity chat with Autumn at the Paper Couturière. We met via Twitter and I just had to get the low down on their fabulous paper products. Paper Couturière has tons of things happening including a newly updated website and super cool app (details to follow later) and lots more. Check it out!

How did you start Paper Couturière?
The Paper Couturière as a business, was formed gradually, over many
years. I never woke up one day and said to myself, "today is the day I
start a business". I'd been designing and handcrafting invitations for
years, and eventually it got to the point where I had to quit my job
working for Corrections Victoria, and focus solely on design.

How long have you been in business and what direction do you plan to move on with your hand made creations?
PC has been an actual business for close to 2 years. I'm still building my clientele, but already have clients who have come to me for more than 1 occasion. Eventually, I would like to spread my wings even further and, while still designing and handcrafting invitations and stationery, work with clients on branding and logo design.

Where are you based?
I'm in Melbourne Australia, but serve Australia wide and
international clients as well. As I'm American, I have a steady client
base from the US.

What are some of your favorite social networking sites?
4- My favourite networking site by far is Twitter. {@papercouturiere} I've met some wonderful people and have formed some great working relationships with many of them. Although I do use Facebook to post new photos; tips; ideas, etc, I find that it's not as interactive with clients and/or vendors as Twitter. I also like Twitter better because it's more fast paced. If I ask someone a question or ask for advice, I get the answer within minutes rather than asking the same question on FB, I may not get an answer at all. This has happened to me before when I've posted questions on Facebook, so, I focus on Twitter.

What makes you stand out from your competitors?
I stand out from my competitors in Australia because of my costing and the nature of my design. Although I do have some digital designs, the majority of my collection is handcrafted using the same techniques and skills that I've learned over the years through my love of scrapbooking. I use different layers; elements, and textures that all come together to make a wonderfully unique piece of paper art. Although I do like digital design, and it is another form of artwork, in my opinion, I believe it takes a different, more in depth skill to go back to basics and create your art using adhesives; paper; scissors, and embellishments. I enjoy that it's much more labour intensive and, although this can drive up the cost of invitations, I still remain competitive to my all-digital-design counterparts.

What are some of the unique events your paper products have been used for?
I'm currently putting together Press Kits for My Wedding Concierge..no pictures on that yet...they're secret between Phyllis & I before the reveal.

What is one of the most over the top request you’ve ever received from a client?
I've not received really any over the top requests from clients. They've all been fairly straight forward and "normal", if that makes sense. But, if I ever get a client asking me to engrave their invitation on a grain of rice like we see at fairs and art shows, you'll be the first person I contact!

What are some of the latest color trends for couples tying the knot this season?
Turquoise. Turquoise is HUGE this wedding season. Pantone labeled it "The colour". That being said, my advise to brides is to not follow a trend just because it's a trend, because you won't be completely happy. If you genuinely love turquoise and want it as the main focal point regarding colour, then by all means, use it. No matter what, make sure whatever colour palette you choose, is one that "speaks to you", that makes you comfortable and happy, and one that completely reflects your event and your & your partners personalities.

How do you find the time to get all the “important” stuff done?
Sometimes, I don't find the time, and those are the days that I'm up until 2 or 3 in the morning. Everyday I take time out for myself and my family. That is priority numero uno for me. Everything else is secondary. I don't care what kind of deadline I'm up against, my family is first. I make it work. And lists? Well, I couldn't live without the good ol'fashioned list! I prioritize and make lists for lists. Somehow, someway, it all comes together.

Which show would best describe you?...and why? Platinum Weddings, Whose Wedding Is It Anyway or Bridezilla’s.
We don't have Platinum Weddings in OZ. I've never seen it and only last week heard about it for the first time. So that show definitely doesn't describe me. Bridezilla's is only shown sporadically so I don't really watch that either. I was a happy-go-lucky bride {who incidentally designed EVERYTHING from the centerpieces to music to flowers to decor to stationery..everything}, and not much stressed me out..so I definitely don't relate to Bridezilla's. I do watch Who's Wedding Is It Anyway from time to time. I would have to say that show definitely describes me the best. I love the organization of the planners and how no matter what goes wrong, they always find a way to make it work and it turns out stunning. I'm very much that way. Being a designer, there are sometimes kinks in the chain. I welcome those "kinks" because it reinforces to me that I really do have a talent. If I didn't, I would let those "kinks" take over me and I would lose control and throw in the towel. You gotta roll w/ the punches. I do. Everyday. And so do the wedding planners on the show. PS. Donnie Brown, if you're reading this, I ♥ you. Come to OZ so we can work together.

So we were taking a stroll through WeddingWire and came across a super cool too and I wanted to share it with you.

Here's some of the things you can do with the Custom Seating Chart:

Add and arrange all your tables onto the floor and then drag your guests to the tables! Your guests are pre-populated from your Guests tool!
Choose from pre-defined table types, or create your own. Customize the exact size of your tables and how many seats will be at each table.
Once you've designed your seating chart, get a printable version of your floor plan or print out a list view of your tables and seating arrangements.

How to Negotiate with Wedding Vendors

As couples plan their weddings, they sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that wedding vendors are in the business of making dreams come true, and that dreams are always ridiculously expensive. Both are untrue. Wedding vendors are in the business of making a profit and what they sell can generally be had at a lower price. You can negotiate with wedding vendors.

While there are probably an infinite number of approaches that can work in negotiating with vendors, there are two that often seem most effective. The first is a friendly but firm approach. Before you meet with the vendor, decide how much you’ll be willing to pay for his or her services. Wedding vendors tend to be personable people, so be someone that they want to work with, but don’t let them drive you any higher than the price you set originally.

The second approach is more of a “good cop, bad cop” one. It will obviously only be effective if there is more than one person at the initial meeting. Decide in advance who is going to be “ecstatic” about the deal and who is going to be “skeptical.” Just when the vendor thinks he or she has locked up a sale, have the skeptical player call the other into a separate room to discuss it. When you come back, suggest a more reasonable price. Hopefully, the vendor won’t be willing to risk losing the sale he has already chalked up in his mind.

One important thing to remember in negotiating with wedding vendors is that a lower price is not the only benefit you might be able to sneak into the deal. The reception hall might be willing to give you an extra hour for free. The caterers might be willing to throw in something extra as your guests arrive. The florist might be willing to substitute a few lilies where you had carnations. If there’s something that’s important to you, make sure the vendor knows it. Once the initial transaction has been made, some vendors can be very generous if you just ask.

Many people will say that money is no issue when planning a wedding. If that’s true for them, more power to them, but it doesn’t have to be true for you. Don’t ever feel bad or stingy for trying to get the most out of every dollar you spend on your special day.

We are so enthused to kick off our Signature Selection. Signature Selection will feature vendors, trends, “must have’s” and information that we feel you’d be interested in.

Juliette Senior is the founder and owner of Unison Event Planners LLC. We met on Twitter last year and always look for her useful tidbits. The Unison Event Planners team is based out of Englewood, NJ. Juliette has a BA Finance and Business Management and was kind enough to give me an interview to shed some light on how she’s making things happen.

1. How did you get started in the event planning industry?
I was always the “birthday girl” at work planning all the baby showers, birthday parties and group outings. Eventually the word got out that I was creative and innovative. I started assisting with planning weddings and pretty soon was planning weddings and events from conception through to execution. Unison Event Planners LLC was officially formed after I planned my 30th birthday cruise to the Bahamas with 30 close friends when it became evident that planning came naturally and nothing gave me greater pleasure than the end result-A happy client with a smile on his/her face.

2. What vision do you have for UEP in the next 3-5 years?
In 3-5 years event productions designed by Unison Event Planners would have been featured in several publications. We will have a store front showroom that offers event planning, design, stationary and party rentals. Finally, I hope to have the need for additional staff.

3. What advice would you offer brides looking to plan their special day?
Don’t get discouraged after the first day of planning and don’t be afraid to ask for help. It will get better.

4. Do you do many destination weddings? Could you share some of your favorite wedding destinations with us?
I’ve done several destination weddings in the past. My favorite destinations are Jamaica, Nassau, Bahamas and St. Maartin.

5. Can you share the most outrageous request you’ve ever received from a client?
My brides are usually edgy and non traditional – just like me. So I wouldn’t say that any of their requests are technically outrageous..but….I did have a bride ask for a conveyor belt as her aisle. She wanted to stand still and go down the aisle on a conveyor belt, like a distribution line at a factory.

6. What are a few of your favorite wedding “things”?
I love everything non-traditional. For example Card Boxes – Marni Gold from Creative Custom Card Boxes designs some amazing card boxes that can be used to house the bride’s cards on the day of the wedding so that the brides doesn’t have to walk around with the traditional satin bag. I also love Paloma’s Nest. Instead of the traditional ring pillow, Caroline offers the cutest hand crafted ring bearer bowls. The best resource that I’ve found is Etsy.

7. Can you share some of the lessons you’re learned over the years as a result of owning UEP? Maybe one or two of your favorites that had the most impact.
The most important lesson that I’ve learned is to set boundaries. When I began the business I was so adamant on getting clients that I would take everyone and lower my prices just to get them. As a result, I signed on “bridezillas” and people who were not willing to pay for the services rendered. I even had clients who called me at 3AM in the morning and I was crazy enough to answer the phone. Now I set and adhere to office hours and I know how to weed out the potential headache clients that can be a downfall to my business.

8. What’s your favorite place to go (or favorite thing to do)?
I confess that I am a reality show junkie. My favorite pass time is watching TV. I am a fan of Law and Order SVU, 24, The Amazing Race, Survivor, So You Think You Can Dance, Criminal Minds and Big Brother to name a few. I know, I know..Iam a looser.

9. If you don’t mind sharing some personal things, who are some of the people that have had a major influence on where you are today?
First, my boyfriend Curtis. He was positive and supportive way before I decided to start Unison Event Planners and he remains positive and supportive today. He even helped me with my first bridal show. We created a customized Unison Event Planner tie for him with the company logo. He walked around the bridal show in a suit and the tie taking pictures. On a daily basis he continues to amaze me with his input, wealth of knowledge and support. He has been and continues to be the person that I share my ideas and thoughts with and I thank him for that. Next, would be my parents and my sister Angela. They have been there for me for as long as I can remember..lol. They support my decisions while accepting the fact that I am my own person. Finally, my close circle of friends. Camille, Karin, Leah, Marielyn, and Tracy. You guys rock!! They are my team and ladies who help me on the day of and with the bridal shows that I do.

10. Which show would best describe you?...and why? Platinum Weddings, Whose Wedding Is It Anyway or Bridezilla’s.
I would have to say Whose Wedding Is It Anyway. I like to cater to the brides who want to stretch their budget at far as possible and I am over Bridezilla’s. I run in the opposite direction!

This is one of our runners that we didn’t post to our blog. Danielle was looking for a pretty snowflake for her January 2009 wedding. She didn’t have a graphic of her own, so we created several for her and this is the one that she selected. It was painted in light blue with silver outlining. Kiersten and Roderick had an amazing design on their wedding invitation and wanted to keep that theme for their aisle runner. When we got the design we couldn't wait to get started. Their wedding colors were pear green and eggplant – a yummy combination! To ensure the closest color match we always recommend that our clients mail us a fabric swatch (our mailing address is on each online proof). Kiersten sent us a swatch and we got to work. This aisle runner was a 45 inches wide and it took a couple of days for us to finish it.

Check out this super cute aisle runner for a Quinceanera. We got this order with less than one week to get it to our client and it turned out great. Angela Mizanti of Angela Mizanti Events wanted a white runner, 75 ft long with silver and pink paint and a pretty graphic with swirls. Here’s here final selection. How to Cutomize Your Aisle Runner

We get a ton of questions from our clients asking for ways to customize their wedding aisle runner, so we figured we’d blog about it.

A popular recommendation would be to have your name and wedding date, along with the first letter of your last names hand painted on the wedding aisle runner. If you’d like to jazz up the monogram even further, you can opt to have embellishments added to your monogram or other details such as roses of calla lilies.

Here are a few wedding aisle runner custom ideas that people have used in their wedding themes.

Monogram
The most frequent aisle runner requests we receive are for monograms. Monograms including single initial , double initials and triple initials. The popular monogram designs include one initial, two first names and the wedding date. That design entails the essential details of the event, so maybe that’s why it’s the most popular.

Phrase
Including a phrase can really add another dimension to your wedding décor. It can be a quote taken from a movie, bible verse or something else that exemplifies your relationship. We actually had a request to paint a phrase the entire length of the wedding aisle runner. That phrase was “True Happiness Is Marrying Your Best Friend”. The aisle runner turned out to be amazing and it’s one of my all time favorites. We were nervous but we measure, calculated, and measured and got it right. Both my husband and I have engineering degrees, so that helped a lot!

More and more request have been coming in for custom designs from our client’s wedding invitations. We’ve complete dozens of aisle runners using designs right from invitations. Today, April 24th, is Arbor Day. What is Arbor day you ask??? Arbor Day is a national day that observes and encourages tree planting. It is celebrated on the last Friday in April.

Recycle - Reuse - Reduce
The title says it all. Find creative ways to reuse things that are going to be trashed.
Start a recycling system at home for papers, plastics, aluminum and glass.

Save Energy
Use public transportation.
This will also save you on gas if you drive every day.
Turn the lights off when you leave one room in your home and go in to the other.

Save Water
Take a 5 minute shower over a bath.
Don’t water your lawn when there’s a storm in the forecast.

Birthday Bash at a Mansion in South Beach

We are so pleased to have been a part of a 40th Birthday celebration for this past weekendin Sourth Beach.

From the pics that we've seen it was an event to remember! The surprise party kicked off on Friday and continued with a party bus/limo ride on Saturday and ended with brunch on Sunday.

Our client came to us for a custom designed black aisle runner...well she ended up getting a custom runner and several custom designed logos! We designed logo's for gift bags, a banner, the Martini Glasses used as centerpieces as well as T-shirts for the guests!

Check out a picture of the runner at the surprise party. It's was lined with cobalt blue candles.

Our client is from the DC metro area (that's how she found us). Thanks so much for allowing us to be a part of the the festivities. We look forward to working with you again in the near future.
